   MYDDELTON ROAD

MYDDLETON ROADLast year I set up a new council body to focus efforts on restoring Myddelton Road to a shopping/living/working area which the whole community can be proud of. This is the biggest and most importnat project I am working on at the moment as Bounds Green Councillor and I believe if we succeed on our current course this will be a lasting testament to the power of an organised, proactive local community getting together with the local authority and creating positive change.

A group of Councillors, members of the public and council departments has been meeting to discuss and strategise a way forward. The results are now beginning to show but we have a long way to go yet.

CASE DETAIL: For many years now Myddelton Road has generally agreed to be in decline. Shops have closed and the street has become increasingly synonomous with anti-social behaviour, lack of respect for the law whether that be in building and planning control, highways regulations, housing and commercial sales. It has become increasingly difficult for retail businesses who rely on passing trade to operate and this has encouraged self-contained units like clothes factories and other non-public-facing operations to flourish. Of course employment-generation is always welcome, but clearly there is a balance to be struck between this and a community road devoid of community use and home just to wholesale outlets, factories and subject to almost constant industrial delivery traffic. The road has also developed numerous issues with regard to housing, in many cases at the low-end of the market whcih has had knock-on effects in terms of the type of businesses which have appeared (and often disappeared just as quickly) in order to house and supply these households.

POSSIBLE SOLUTION: I set up the Myddelton Road Action Group last year to raise the profile and aid the work of the Bowes Park Community Association and others who have wroked to lever change on Myddelton Road for so long.

WHAT I'VE DONE: The Action Group has met several times now and there is a concerted focus by the council, directed on Myddelton Road steered by the community.
