Haringey Labour were in good cheer last night after the lib dems safest area polled a 6+% swing to Labour in the Alexandra ward by-election giving Labour a larger share of the vote than the same area in 2002.
Labour in Haringey bucking the trend.
The Conservatives registered the largest swing of the day 6.7% up reflecting the national picture and there was a confidence zapping swing away from the Lib Dems of 7.3%.
All parties 9save one) were united in their celebrations that the BNP did not even take 1 percent of the vote.
Anger at Lib Dem scare tactics.
The lib dems were coming under fire today for distributing a scandalous leaflet on the eve of the by-election claiming that ‘Haringey Labour’ are planning to scrap recycling services in the Borough!
The facts:
- There have never been plans to ’scrap’ any recycling services: bottle banks, paper banks, only to INCREASE services available—including PLASTIC & CARDBOARD in the very near future
- In fact, local services have just been added to with new textile recycling banks all across the borough
- In just 7 years Haringey have increased recycling from 2% of household waste to over 26% and it’s rising every year!
- Haringey’s one of the top Boroughs in London for the different types of Recycling available and getting better every year
Coming after their poor showing at the May elections, this result proves that the Lib Dem support base is receding. No matter how they hail the result in Alexandra, people are realising that the Lib Dems have nothing to offer except tactics the wildly misleading recycling scare story above shows.
Joanna Christophides, the Labour candidate was a really terrific candidate and worked tremendously hard to put her relentlessly positive vision across to the people of Alexandra.
Cllrs Ali Demirci and Matt Cooke today offered congratulations to newly elected Lib Dem Nigel Scott and wished him well, but joined calls for a statement in the near future apologising for the dishonesty of the recent lib dem by-election campaigning tactics.
