LIB DEM BETRAYAL - YOU ARE NOT POWERLESS!

LIB/CONHundreds of local people people have written in to the local Labour Party appalled at the Liberal Democrats' betrayal in siding with David Cameron's Tories in Government. Quite simply local people didn't vote Lib Dem to get Tory, but because of that vote for the local Lib Dems that's exactly what they did get.

Local Lib Dem MP Lynne Featherstone just this past week has accepted a position in this Lib/Con Government. Does she think local people have forgotten the graph on every lib dem leaflet sent out in the recent election campaign saying 'Tories can't win here!'? Well, it seems they may as well have done.

Just this week the Con/Lib coalition has announced its plans to introduce a new rule to the House of Commons making a vote of no confidence in the Government only achieveable by a 55% vote of our parliament rather than the current 50% + 1 as it is today - as it has been in our constitution, as democracy dictates is fair, not what this coalition of opportunity dictates is necessary to cling to power. Think for a moment what Lynne Featherstone would have said if the Labour Government had dared to propose such a move! Yet this is the Government which she has deigned to join. It's a disgrace.

Thousands of individuals up and down the UK have responded - to what they have called nothing short of a betrayal by Lib Dem candidates - by joining the Labour Party. Get involved. Join us and help us in our mission to make our area an even better place to live.

You can read some of the reasons other people all over Great Britain are coming back to Labour below. We hope you will join us, and continue to support all we're trying to do for Bounds Green.

THANK YOU FOR VOTING FOR US - WE WILL NOT LET YOU DOWN

OUR PLEDGE TO YOU - Together with the local community, we will make Bounds Green even better!

Over the last four years we’ve dedicated ourselves - working with the local community - to bring about positive changes to our area. That’s why we felt proud to ask for your vote in the recent elections, because we were proud to stand on the record of our achievements and we were delighted to have recieved your overwhelming support. Thank you. Your local team of Labour Councillors: Matt Cooke, Ali Demirci and Jaonna Christophides will be working tirelessly with you and for you over the coming four years.

We were delighted to have recieved messages of support from all over the ward during our campaign. Here are just a few:

CAROLINE“The Bowes Park Community Association has worked with our local councillors for over 10 years to improve our area.  We owe a particular debt of gratitude to Councillors Cooke and Demirci who have given their unstinting support to our work and many events over the last years.

This has resulted in cleaner streets, more rubbish bins, the Hidden River Path has been resurfaced after decades of neglect, the new community centre in Commerce Road will open in 2010, and the ongoing regeneration work in Myddleton Road - which has already made a great difference - will be even more visible over coming months.”

Caroline Simpson, Community Activist, former Chair of the BPCA and resident of Whittington Road, N22

“Matt and Ali, our Labour councillors have worked ceaselessly with us, and after much negotiation they got the Council to provide a lovely planted area in Finsbury Gardens and also re-equipped the kid’s playground there. This encouraged local people to come together and hold the Finsbury Festival. Matt and Ali are fantastic Labour councillors who really do listen and respond to the community’s views. ”

Kate Franzman, Chair, Friends of Finsbury Gardens, of Nightingale Road N22

ernie nice“Matt and Ali have done a lot as local councillors. I’ve lived in Bounds Green for many years and the area has changed so much. Since they were elected they have been so active and I have seen the area improve because they work together with local community groups and individuals – they deserve everyone’s support!”

Mr Ernie Nice, Pensioner and resident of Clarence Road, N22

“We’ve known Matt and Ali our local councillors for a few years now. We do lots to support the local community and so we soon got to know the most active local councillors we have. They’ve both been crucial in establishing the Myddleton Road project and we’ve seen the huge improvements that have been made to the area.”

Tsegay Tekle, manager, the Red Sea Supermarket, Myddleton Road, N22

JIM FRIEDMAN“Matt and Ali have made a real difference to Bowes Park in the last few years. Carefully listening to the residents every step of the way. Roads have been improved unscrupulous property developers have been curtailed, Last summer’s Finsbury Festival was a great day where we all came together with pride in our neighbourhood.

Matt and Ali get results! As a fellow parent at Bounds Green School, I know Joanna is a pillar of our community; volunteering, organising, fundraising and always ready to help. She is a person with a real knowledge of the area and I think she’d make an excellent Councillor.”
Jim Friedman, Self Employed designer and local dad, Truro Road

A NEW COMMUNITY SPACE OPENS IN MYDDLETON ROAD!

Myddelton Road Opening 2Newly elected Labour Councillors Matt Cooke, Joanna Christophides and Ali Demirci joined a big crowd of local residents just hours after being elected to officially open the new Myddleton Road Community Room at 128 Myddelton Road, N22 on Saturday 8th May 2010.

This superb resource for local people will be the home of the Bowes Park Community Assocaition (BPCA) and has been delivered as part of the Myddelton Road Action Group's work to bring change to this beautiful and historic local street.

Photo: Cllr Matt Cooke cuts the opening cake with Cllr Joanna Christophides in the background.

The Myddleton Road Action Group was founded in 2007 by Cllr Matt Cooke to better enable and develop years of work by the BPCA to improve and regenerate Myddleton Road. The work has already enabled the street to gain new 'heritage style' teardrop lighting, repavement, re-laying the road, tree-planting and twice daily domestic and commercial waste collection. There is a strong focus on planning issues affecting the road and close scrutiny of new aplications.

In the coming six months new victorian style awnings and canopies will be fitted to certain properties, illegal satellite dishes removed and unsightly metal window shutters relocated internal to the shop windows.

Over the next two years the committee has secured over £500,000 from Haringey Council and English Heritage to make significant architectural refurbishments of a number fo the original Edwardian properties.

BOUNDS GREEN LABOUR STANDS BY SURE START

Did you know that the Tories have pledged to cut part of the Sure Start children's centre budgets? A cut which would mean 1 in 5 of the 1,400 centres which Labour has opened in communities all over the UK would be under threat.

We've been campaigning to show how much the local centre at Bounds Green School means to local families and young people.

We will fight any proposed cuts to sure start and we'll stand by local families who rely on this brilliant service at Bounds Green School. We hope you'll support us in supporting them!
